James David Vance

R · OHAge 41· MAGA / national-conservative populist

JD Vance is the 50th Vice President of the United States, serving since January 20, 2025. He was U.S. Senator from Ohio from January 2023 to January 2025, winning the seat by approximately 6 percentage points over Tim Ryan. He is the author of 'Hillbilly Elegy' (2016), a memoir about his upbringing in Middletown, Ohio that became a bestseller and Netflix film. Vance's political evolution — from 2016 Trump critic ('America's Hitler') to 2024 running mate — is one of the more documented political transformations of the period. His Senate tenure focused on China hawkishness, anti-corporate-power positions on the right, and skepticism of Ukraine aid.

The Featured Four

Promises that define the record.

Four promises chosen to span how voters across the political spectrum view this politician's record.

KeptForeign PolicyPROMISE #1

Oppose continued Ukraine military aid.

Verdict reasoning

Vance voted NO on H.R. 815 (April 2024 Ukraine aid portion) and earlier Ukraine supplementals. Publicly led Senate Republican opposition to Ukraine aid. Vote-record consistent with promise.

PartialImmigrationPROMISE #2

Aggressive border enforcement.

Verdict reasoning

Vance voted against the February 2024 Bipartisan Border Bill, citing insufficient enforcement provisions. Supported Trump-era immigration framework. Border legislation Vance preferred did not pass during his Senate tenure; Trump 2nd-term executive actions begin January 2025 (outside his Senate scoring window).

KeptIndustrial PolicyPROMISE #3

Industrial policy / bring manufacturing back to America.

Verdict reasoning

Co-sponsored Railway Safety Act after East Palestine derailment. Voted YES on CHIPS Act provisions extending to Ohio Intel facility. Promoted anti-globalist trade framework consistent with promise.

PartialReproductive RightsPROMISE #4

Pro-life / restrict abortion access.

Verdict reasoning

Voted against Women's Health Protection Act. Supported state-level abortion restrictions. However, after Ohio's Issue 1 (November 2023) constitutionalized abortion rights with 57% support, Vance's national pro-life advocacy moderated. As VP candidate, supported Trump's 'leave it to the states' framing, which is less restrictive than his initial federal-ban support.
